Birthday Stories, selected by Haruki Murakami

This is an anthology of short stories, all with a birthday theme, chosen by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. He also wrote the introduction and contributed a story.

This is a quick read, maybe 2 hours tops. Each story is very short. Most of these are not happy birthdays. A couple are reflective, like the one by David Foster Wallace, or strange (I'm going to go ahead and say that getting your spouse a one night stand for their birthday is strange. Judge me as you will.) But most of them are, you know- kind of sad. There are two stories just on old widows forgotten by their children on their birthdays. Murakami's story ends things off pleasantly though. An interesting little read.
